Tip of the Day – Spot Focus Point
For dogs with hair over their eyes, face them upwards towards the light to get some light and catchlights into their eyes. If your camera offers it, use a very fine focus point (Single-point Spot AF on some professional Canon bodies) to shoot past the hair to the eyeball, as a regular single focus point will often focus on the hair in front instead.
